Audacity is free, open source software for recording and editing sounds. It is available for Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux, and other operating systems.
CDex is a free, open source CD-Ripper, extracting digital audio data from an Audio CD. The application supports many Audio encoders, like MPEG (MP2,MP3), VQF, AAC encoders.
Audiograbber is a formerly retail CD-Ripper that the author has now released as freeware (no cost). Far from your basic CD-audio ripper, it has many useful enhancements and can even extract audio AND lyric files from your Karaoke CG-G disks.
If other media players are just too cluttered up and confusing for you, try Winamp. It's a refreshingly basic, yet powerful, media player that will play pretty much anything you throw at it. And if you like "cluttered up", there's still lots of add-ons.
